Today was our first and only full day in Venice! We arrived yesterday at about 4:30 pm after a long wait for me to enter through immigration and finding public transport to the Hostel which we're staying at, Anda. The hostel is incredibly modern, offers a buffet breakfast and is located close to the train station, so getting into the main island of Venice is easy - a quick 12 minute train ride and about €1.80. Yesterday after our arrival, we quickly made our way to catch the last hours of daylight on the island and had our first authentic Italian pizzas, which were promptly followed by gelato. We wondered around the streets for a while, and found our way to Piazza San Marco, known as the heart of Venice.

Today, we decided to head to Murano, the local glass blowing island which was created in 1291 when the glass furnaces were moved from Venice in the fear of them starting fires in the town. In the heat we quickly decided our first stop should be lunch, which we found at canalside restaurant in the shade where the sea breeze was just amazing. We both had pasta, Jamie having a bowl of simple spaghetti bolognese with the local beer, and I having some ravioli with napoli sauce and a red wine. This was all followed by tiramisu and more ice cream - if you can't already tell, I'm eating well.

We visited a glass blowing demonstration conducted by a very Italian looking grandfather, and I bought a cute little glass dolphin figurine from the same place, handcrafted from genuine Murano glass.

Tonight we go for dinner in Venice with some friends from high school who happen to be here at the same time.

Venice has been great and just so photogenic and the food has been delightful, and we've really enjoyed our stay here. Tomorrow we leave again for Rome, which we'll be getting to by train and so hopefully all goes well. I'll keep posting!
