More ruins and beetroot pesto

Writer's picture: Soph SjöströmSoph Sjöström

The last couple of days have been relatively slow as I've been staying with the Stevens in central Rome. We've been eating (a lot) of sorbet, pasta and Caprese paninis. The first day we visited the Herculaneum, which I must say is much better than Pompeii. Not only is it smaller and easier to explore in its entirety, it is much better preserved and a lot of the plaster artwork as well as the original wood structures remain. Would definitely recommend over visiting Pompeii - they even give you a little information booklet for each site where you can read about its respective importance. There were also a bunch of skeletons (around 300) to James' delight - a lot more fascinating that three plaster casts of some people and a dog.

Yesterday we pretty much just wondered around Rome, sometimes shopping (I got an H&M skirt for the value of $11 AUD, bargain). We went to dinner at the most amazing A La Carte restaurant on a hotel rooftop terrace, where I had minestrone soup for starters and orecchiette pasta in a beetroot pesto which was fantastic. For desert there was apple strudel.

Today we've been out to visit Villa Andrea, which is pretty much just more ruins further out of Rome. I mean I think I've seen enough ruins to last a lifetime but it was still cool. Katherine, David and the boys have gone to visit the Vatican, but since I went when I was in Rome earlier this month, I'm just relaxing in the hotel room. Tonight we're having a little early birthday dinner for my 20th as the boys leave tomorrow while Katherine and I still have a few days left. Tomorrow we're doing a cooking course where we visit a local market and learn to make gnocchi - I'm excited!

Ciao!
