Women in social media

Writer's picture: Soph SjöströmSoph Sjöström

Social media is a large part of my muse scene, where I find inspiration for all elements of my life. This is a short introduction to my ever growing list of women I aspire to be and hope to learn from in the future, many of whom I've been following for several years. These women are not only beautiful but also passionate, successful and talented in many ways.

Brinkley has got to be one of my all time favourites. She's a vegan marine biologist, surfer and environmental advocate from South Australia and has always inspired me to do better. Not only does she show her love through her actions for all animals (in and out of water) Brinkley also founded Balu Blue Foundation "with a vision to be a part of the environmental awareness movement, and to inspire others to live with light footprint on this planet, to learn about and respect wildlife, both within Australia and internationally." Additionally, she's been working with Two Songs Sanctuary, a rescue for orphaned native animals of the Eyre Peninsula, which is also the home of her adopted Euro, Bunji. Brinkley has been raising Bunji for around a year now after they accidentally hit and killed Bunji's mother. Overall, Brinkley is an amazing girl who I would absolutely recommend following if you're looking for some cute dog, seal, kangaroo and dolphin photos and awareness on your feed every now and again.

I've been following Sally for some time. Famous for the erotic stories she posts with her partner Mitch Gobel, she's a bit of a wildcard and famous for baring it all online (which I totally dig). I'm drawn to her spiritual freedom and multi-dimensional talents such as art and yoga, where she says that " I just want to teach people how to be happy. I want to remind people to fall in love with the world." Not only this, her and Mitch are a killer couple (despite the tough parts of their relationship) and their art works are always amazing. Very inspiring people.

Model, dancer and Byron Bay girl Mimi Elashiry has to be one of the quirkiest of the girls I follow, always seeming a little unpredictable. She was initially rejected by modelling agencies for being too short, but soon built her own media empire and has become one of the many dominant 'boho lifestyle' bloggers online. A typical festival girl to me, she seems to take on the fashion industry head on and isn't scared to share her opinion or express herself. Her confidence and fearlessness to be herself really appeals to me, and one day I hope to be as self-assertive as her.

Billie is an ambassador for Tree of Life and in the past, Volcom Stone. She's an Australian model, stylist and blogger having lived in India as a fashion student, brings much of her Byron culture into her posts and every day life. I'm fond of Billie as she revolves around chill and earthy vibes which are relaxing and appeal to me.

Last but not least, Amie makes it to my list as one of the most inspiring women I follow. She's her own boss and works from home with ceramics, where her designs are well known and highly sought after. Not only this, she shares her battles with mental illness and is very open about her experiences, and posts daily mantras, quotes and overall opinions about things I've never thought deeply enough about. Not only do I love Amie's work, but her attitude to the world is very grounding and rational.

I want to mention that there are many many women I admire, and this is only a handful of them, whom for the most part I admire aesthetically as that's the nature of social media nowadays. There are so many more role models that I have who are activists, actresses, models, scientists and athletes, constantly breaking the glass ceiling of what it is expected of women and of what we can achieve in our lifetimes. Again, this is only a small handful of the great women who inspire me in simple ways.
