Updates from Thailand: Bangkok

Writer's picture: Soph SjöströmSoph Sjöström

I left Sanur at around 4am on Monday to catch my 7:30am flight out to Indonesia. I was sad to leave but at the same time was ready to see some different scenery having never seen Thailand before. The flight was pretty quick (4 hours) and once I arrived I realised Vincent and I had accidentally arrived at different airports. Luckily I had arranged airport pick up for him, and had to find my own way to the hotel in Bangkok's Old Quarter. After we had checked in, we head out to explore a little.

We had lunch at Ethos, a cheap vegetarian restaurant.

Then went to a popular strip (still don't know the name of it) to look around. Vincent got lured in to trying fried tarantula and scorpion (yuck).

In the afternoon the monsoon rains came in, we relaxed in the hotel to wait it out, then rented some push bikes to head out to Chinatown to try some of the street food. No surprise that the only things I could eat were mango sticky rice and banana roti. Vincent had grilled jellyfish and squid roe (again, yuck).

We only had one fully day in Bangkok after arriving, and so we had to try and pick only a handful of things to do while we were there the next day. As we were in the Old Quarter, our first stop was the Grand Palace. It's a huge compound featuring mant temples including that of one of the Emerald Buddha, as well government buildings. Here's a bunch of photos.

The actual palace (the royals don’t live here)

Afterwards we walked to a undercover food market including the Wang Lang walking street, and saw so many amulet stalls. We also saw these cursed things, whatever they are.

Afterwards we took a tuktuk to Iconsiam, the largest mall in Bangkok. It was huge and reminded me of Emporium but way cooler.

The whole bottom floor was a big souvenir market

For dinner, we headed back to one of the busy streets in the Old Quarter and got some Pad Thai from a street stall. We had a flight to Koh Samui the next day so took it pretty easy.

I'm aware I'm behind on reporting on my travels but I'm trying to catch up! Will post about Koh Samui soon :)
