Origins of me

Writer's picture: Soph SjöströmSoph Sjöström

In the late 90s, I was born. Manhattan was the first place I ever called home, nestled into a small apartment on Central Park west. Only a short four years later, I was moved on to Helsinki, Finland, where I spent most of my childhood, a tangled matt of knotted hair and twigs alongside the open faced cliffs and regional dialect. Leaning towards my awkward early teenage years, I was finally hauled across to globe to Australia. Living in Melbourne has been a series of ups and downs, not only learning the city but also learning about myself and those around me.

The beginnings of my ambitions lie in my first months in the country, an odd adolescent with an unusual preoccupation of all animals alike drove us to purchase our first pullets to accompany the recent acreage my grandfather had purchased in the state's south east. From there on our collection of poultry breeds quickly escalated in not the most elegant manner with homemade nesting boxes, roosts and breeding attempts. If there was one thing I could've gone back and changed, it

would be my approach to rearing livestock  - I don't think I ever knew what the term 'being prepared' meant. The hens and ducks eventually all perished as a result of the region's distressingly large and widely distributed fox population. However, along with our poultry ran a series of four bucks, Toggenburg goats rescued as 'bobby kids' from the local dairy, with the most likely original fate of dinner. It seemed, from there on, that we felt our hearts open to were not the pedigree, prized individuals of each species, but those who were down on their luck and perhaps not being handed the best slice of life.

Even now as a student, animals have always been a sort of peace within me. Constantly scanning online auctions for the unlucky rescue sheep or hen, which I was restrained from owning as a result of a practical mother, I yearn to help those who cannot help themselves. Although this concept only stretches so far with man, the odd dog or so will be endowed with love. At this current point in time, there are only so many animals on our agenda as we cope with the renovation of our residence. My existence, of course, is hardly limited to that of rescuing animals. On the brink of adulthood there are many qualities which I possess and which I strive for, most notably my artistic works and potential. Further, my studies after this year are leaning towards the sciences, then possibly advancing on to Veterinary Medicine. There is much more to uncover however, over time, about my life in relation to all its aspects which one is invited to follow.
