Apartment tour

Writer's picture: Soph SjöströmSoph Sjöström

I've just arrived in Copenhagen, Denmark, and I'll be living here until late December this year. I've secured myself a shared apartment in the Det Nye Emdrupborg Kollegium in Emdrup, which is about 20 minutes north of central Copenhagen, easily accessible by train, bus and bike. Alas, as I've arrived early (the semester begins in September) because I'm doing a pre-semester Danish course, the apartment is empty and I'm currently living by myself.

Initial impressions: nice, simple living, but has a serious silverfish problem. The place has been vacant for a couple of months and the lack of use has opened up territory for these critters, and I've made use of my free time by trying to find and smack them with my Birkenstocks. My kindness for animals is vast, but stops at cockroaches, earwigs, silverfish and mosquitoes. I was given a quick tour of the college grounds, which consists of three separate buildings. There is a common room on each floor, as well as a laundry, gym and "party room". Pretty simple stuff.

I then made a trip to the local Netto, which is from what I could gather, a bit of a budget supermarket. I bought a bunch of staple foods like rice, pasta, oats, bread, margarine etc. as well as a basil plant still in the pot as a friend. I've named him Eddie. Thanks to mum's advice, I had some linen to make up the bed with, but didn't have a pillow so I really didn't end up sleeping well either way.

Eddie and I

First thing in the morning, I visited Lidl to pick up some more necessities such as shampoo, conditioner etc. and then went to IKEA. My incredibly limited Danish is making life here almost ridiculous as I feel like an idiot trying to pronounce anything. I can't even order a cinnamon bun at IKEA without a great deal of stress.

Eventually got the cinnamon bun, which here is called a kanelsnegle

Honestly I can't wait for my course to start so I can begin comprehending things here. First casualty that was a result of this language barrier was that I accidentally bought whole coffee beans instead of ground, and so now I have coffee beans sitting in the pantry and I don't know what to do with them. I don't think I can afford a grinder. Anyway, I had quite a bit of fun in IKEA and completely forgot about colour schemes etc. and so currently my room is looking very ... colorful. Without further ado, here is a tour of my humble abode:

The entrance

Also I know this is shocking taste but I really did love this entrance mat and so bought it because I'm an adult now and can do what I want.

I found some blu tack to stick up my very budget artwork

Got a little bookcase (before said blu tack was found)

Entrance to my building

There's a little vegetable garden

On the first night I was so tired and stressed out I just decided to buy myself a salad for dinner. It was surprisingly nice, with radishes, nuts and Teriyaki sauce.

I'm now starting to realise that if I give an apartment tour as well as detail my happenings, this will be a very long post. I've decided to therefore write two separate posts! See my next one for my adventures in Copenhagen's centre and getting out into normal (?) life here.
